I was asked for a baby quilt, to be given as a gift. I didn't have any that I wanted to part with. I didn't want to give away the first one I made to an unknown person, and I sure wasn't ready to give up the I Spy Quilt, another one the thread bled on a white background so....I put this one together. It is a floor cloth for a baby. It has high loft batting, free form piecing and my first attempt at machine applique. I am enjoying the machine applique and am working on another small applique piece.
I am thinking this is rather "modern".  What do you think is it "modern" or just a bit weird?  I like this funky fabric and didn't want to cut too small.

The back is made from my ever shrinking stash of flannels. How big is the stash you ask? It is one
size 12 shoe box size...and not crammed full either. Ha!
Wishing everyone a wonderful melting snow time. Watch out for thin ice.

Numbers and Colours a Question.

2013!  Some days I am startled,  or is that I startle when that number 2013 rolls across my brain.
I wonder what it is about that number?
So here's an odd question, do any of you 'see' or associate a colour with a number?
Wishing everyone an exemplary 2013!   On to quilting  :)
This quilt is called Rose Cottage, lots of sweet applique, lots of buttons. This was stitched freehand from the front. The piecer knows about the pros & cons of sewing on the buttons before quilting...her choice.

Here it is displayed on a queen size bed

The colours are not very clear in this picture of a crib size quilt.  I find  it a very pleasing green, looks a tad grey here.  A very quick all over large stipple is all this needed.
Wahoo....I am sure enjoying having the long arm in a warm room in stead of the very cool Attic.
Happy Wednesday...good ol hump day...weekends almost here.

A Bunch o` Butterflies

One of my readers mentioned that I haven`t been posting pictures of the quilts I have been working on. I have been working on a couple of quilts for my Guilds outreach program. I didn`t take pictures of the last one, I really don`t remember why, but that`s the story. This one has been hanging about the cupboard for a while now. It had a couple of issues. The fullness in this border.
You can see the seam created with all the extra fabric. (red pin)
A pieced polyester backing was also part of the mix, not a lot of fun. Maybe I am getting too particular.  The thing is I like to be efficient at these give away works, so when there are these issues to work around the last thing I need is to watch the back end too.....sigh.
I put two layers of batt in the centre medallion to absorb the fullness. I am guessing this was a Round Robin, there being such a variety in techniques and skill levels.

I think someone will enjoy this little number, I adore the butterflies.
Happy Wednesday,

Applique - Marie Antoinette

Oh boy, these are my least favourite quilts to quilt....but I do think applique is a wonderful thing.  I do find all that open space intimidating. How to do the applique justice, as well as fill those big spaces...  this quilt has a lot of empty space/canvas.

Well it had a lot of canvas, it is finished.
Happy Tuesday,

Work in Progress

I get to work on this lovely number next.  I was going to say lovely little number but that it isn't.  It will take a few hours....other than outlining the applique I have no other instructions from the piecer.   Check back soon to see the finished product.
